Natural Remedies to Cure Breast Pain

Breast pain is a common problem occurring in most of the women during menstrual cycle. A study conducted by California Pacific Medical Centre states that, around 50 to 70 percent of the women suffer from mastalgia or breast pain during menstrual cycle.


Signs of Breast Pain

The following are the signs and symptoms of breast pain or mastalgia.

  • Stabbing pain
  • Heaviness
  • Soreness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling in both breasts
  • Constant or occasional pain

Breast pain can be classified into two main clinical patterns,

  1. Cyclical Pain

During cyclical pain, the intensity changes during the menstrual cycle. The main reason for this type of pain is the hormonal changes that take place in the body during menstruation.

  1. Non-Cyclical Pain

This pain remains unchanged during the menstrual cycle. This type of breast pain is less frequent and is associated with issues that affect the structure of the breasts, such as cysts, trauma, prior surgery or other factors.

Other Causes of Breast Pain

Apart from the cyclic and non cyclic pain patterns, there are other reasons behind breast pain as given below,

  • Imbalance of fatty acids in the breast cells
  • Medications
  • Large breasts
  • Breastfeeding
  • Wearing ill-fitted bras

Home Remedies for Breast Pain

Breast pain occurring before or during menstrual cycle can be eased by certain home remedies. These natural ingredients help in reliving the pain and tenderness in the breast.

Ice Pack

Ice pack is an effective way to get rid of the pain in the breasts. The cold temperature tends to numb the area as a result of which the selling reduces.


How to Use?

  • Place a few ice cubes in a plastic bag or clean washcloth
  • Apply this pack to each of the breasts for 10-15 minutes
  • Repeat until the pain subsides
  • You may also use hot and cold compress alternatively to reduce the tenderness and swelling in the breasts.

Massaging the breast helps in reducing the inflammation by improving the blood circulation in that area. It helps in maintaining healthy breast tissues as more nutrients enters the breast preventing the pain and swelling.

How to Use?

  • While taking a shower, apply soap to the breasts and massage gently for a few minutes from the centre of the chest towards the armpits
  • Breastfeeding mothers can also do this massage but by avoiding soap in the nipples area
  • Another remedy is to apply a mixture of camphor oil and olive oil to the breasts and massage in circular motion for 10-15 minutes
  • Alternatively, you may also mix equal amount of wheat germ oil and apricot oil to massage the breasts
  • Do this twice or thrice a day to reduce the pain and inflammation in the breasts
Evening Primrose

Evening primrose oil is one of the best remedies for breast pain. It consists of active ingredient, gamolenic acid (GLA), a type of fatty acid that helps the body to respond well to hormonal changes. This in turn helps in easing the tenderness and the pain in the breasts.


How to Use?

  • Apply few drops of evening primrose oil on the breasts and massage gently for 5-10 minutes
  • Alternatively, you may also take evening primrose oil standardized extract after consulting a doctor about the dosage
  • It is not advisable for pregnant women and epilepsy patients to use evening primrose oil remedies.
Castor Oil

Castor oil consists of ricinoleic acid which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It improves the blood circulation thereby maximizing the nutrients reach to the cells. On the other hand it helps in the removal of waste products and inflammatory factors from the body.


How to Use?

  • Mix one teaspoon of castor oil with two teaspoons of olive oil
  • Use it to massage the breasts
  • Do this twice daily during the week before the periods

Dandelion can help in combating the pain and tenderness of the breasts according to naturopathy. It is a natural diuretic and contains lots of potassium that helps in flushing out the extra fluids from the body. It also prevent water retention and thus reduces the breast pain.


How to Use?

  • Add one teaspoon of dried dandelion root in a cup of water and simmer for 15 minutes
  • Strain the mixture and add a spoon of honey to it
  • Drink at least 3 cups of this herbal dandelion roots tea everyday
  • Alternatively, dandelion supplements can also be taken after consulting from the doctor
  • This remedy must be followed few days prior to the menstrual cycle to prevent the pain

Chasteberry herb is used to treat cyclic breast pain and pther symptoms of PMS. This herb has a positive effect on pituitary gland. It suppresses the release of prolactin, a hormone responsible for PMS symptoms which includes tenderness and pain in the breasts.


How to Use?

  • The recommended dosage of dry chasteberry extract is 20 mg and has to be taken twice or thrice a day
  • Liquid extracts of chasteberry can also be taken by adding 40 drops of the extract to a glass of water and drinking it every morning
  • Before starting these supplements, it is strongly advisable to consult a doctor.

The above home remedies are effective in reducing the pain and inflammation in the breasts to a large extent. However, in case the pain persists for a longer time or in case of continuous throbbing pain in the breasts, it is better to get diagnosed by a physician at the earliest.
