Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs due to blood clot in one or more veins located deep inside the body. Most of the time, these clots develop in the legs, but it may occur anywhere in the body. It is formed when the blood circulation or clotting doesn’t occur properly. Consulting the doctor and get it diagnosed must the first and foremost step in treating deep vein thrombosis. It is advised to consult a doctor before using any home remedy to prevent spontaneous bleeding or hemorrhage especially if taking anti platelet or anticoagulant drugs.

1. Elevation and Compression

Elevation and compression of the affected areas is one of the effective ways to reduce the swelling and pain in deep vein thrombosis.


What to Do?

  • Wear compression stockings as recommended by the doctor
  • Make sure the stockings are fitted professionally
  • Elevate the leg whenever at rest
  • Repeat this at least 3 to 4 times a day for 15 minutes at a time to help relieve the pressure in the veins
  • When elevating the legs, make sure to raise the foot higher than the hip
2. Exercise

Regular exercise helps in reducing the cholesterol levels in the body. This in turn helps in fighting obesity and also improves blood circulation. It also lowers the risk of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis.


What to Do?

  • Walk for half an hour or more at least 5 days a week
  • When sitting for long hours get up and walk around every 2 to 3 hours for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Once a week, take up swimming, jogging, biking or similar activities
  • Perform simple foot and leg exercises for 15 minutes every morning
  • Stretch the legs and exercise it frequently while working in a seated position for long hours
  • Make an exercise plan by consulting the doctor
3. Ginger

Ginger has great benefits on the body and helps in treating deep vein thrombosis. It is a natural salicylate and can block vitamin K and thin down the blood. It also boosts metabolism and improves blood circulation in the arteries and veins. It prevents high cholesterol which is the main cause for plaque buildup and inhibit circulation. According to a study, it was found that ginger is an effective antiplatelet and COX-1 enzyme inhibitor.


What to Do?

  • Make ginger tea by boiling one tablespoon of grated ginger in a cup of water and boiling it at simmer flame for 10 minutes

5. Vitamin E
