Eye strain is a common problem among youngsters and adults due to the advent of digital technology. The digital devices weaken the eye sight and causes strain on the eyes due to continuous staring for long stretch of time. This may lead to several problems and cause discomfort.

Eye strain may be due to one of the following reasons.

  • Staring at digital devices
  • Using digital devices for long stretch of time
  • Reading in low light
  • Reading without taking breaks
  • Allergies
  • Incorrect vision prescription
  • Exposure to bright light

Symptoms of Eye Strain

The following are the signs and symptoms of eye strain.

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Difficulty in focusing
  • Dry eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Pain in neck
  • Pain in shoulders or back

The symptoms of eye strain occur during the morning most of the time. But one may experience this discomfit anytime of the day.

Home Remedies for Eye Strain

There are several over-the-counter eye drops available in the market that can ease the symptoms of eye strain. Apart from that, you may also try on various natural ways to get rid of the problem.

1. Massage

A gentle massage is a great way to relax the eyes. During eye strain, an eye massage helps in various ways. It improves blood circulation to the eyes and relaxes the muscles around the eyes. It also stimulates the tear glands and helps in preventing dry eyes.

What to Do?

  • Use your fingers to gently massage the eyelids and muscles above the eyebrows for about 10 to 20 seconds
  • Gently massage the lower eyelid against the lower bone for about 10 to 20 seconds
  • Massage the temple and upper cheek bones
  • Do this once or twice times daily
  • You can use a few drops of olive oil or an eye cream for a smooth massage
2. Cold Water

Cold water is very effective in relieving mild eye strain. It can improve blood circulation and relax the tired muscles around the eyes. It reduces eye swelling and puffiness.

What to Do?

  • Splash some cold water on the face and closed eyes whenever eyes feel strained or tired
  • It will have a quick relaxing impact on your eyes
  • For a more concentrated remedy, dip a soft washcloth in cold water
  • Wring out the extra moisture
  • Place the cold washcloth on the closed eyelids for 1 minute
  • Repeat as needed.
  • In case of puffiness along with strained eyes, use a cold compress
  • Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean cloth
  • Place it on the closed eyelids
  • The puffiness will decrease after 5 to 10 minutes of application
3. Warm Compress

Warm compress is also equally effective in reducing the eye strain. It relaxes the muscles around the eyes and reduces the strain and soother dry eyes. It also helps in reducing the pain during eye sty.

What to Do?

  • Dip a soft cloth in warm water and wring out the excess moisture
  • Lie down comfortably, close the eyes and place the warm towel over the eyelids
  • Relax and breathe slowly for 1 minute
  • Change the washcloth and repeat the process 3 or 4 times
  • Follow this treatment 1 or 2 times daily
4. Sunning

Sunning is yet another beneficial technique used to relax strained and tired eyes. Sun helps the body to synthesize vitamin D. It is very essential for the overall health. Sunning can be done between 8 am and 10 am to avoid tanning.

What to Do?

  • Stand in a sunny place in the early morning
  • Close your eyes and allow the sunlight to fall on the eyelids
  • Feel the warmth on your eyes and slowly move your eyes up and down, right to left and clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Repeat this process for a total of 5 minutes
  • Follow it with palming
  • Do this once daily
5. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea has natural anti-inflammatory property that reduces the swelling around the eyes. It is soothing and relaxing which relieves stress immediately. The used tea bags of chamomile tea can be very effective in treating strained eyes.

What to Do?

  • Steep 2 chamomile tea bags in a cup of hot water for 5 minutes
  • Remove the tea bags, and put one in the refrigerator and the other on the kitchen counter
  • For a warm treatment, put the tea bag from the kitchen counter on the closed eyelids for 5 minutes
  • For a cool treatment, place the refrigerated tea bag on the eyelids
  • Repeat this treatment as and when required
  • Also, drink 2 to 3 cups of chamomile tea to alleviate a headache, one of the common symptoms of eye strain
6. Palming

Palming is a great way to instantly relax the strained eyes. While reading or spending too much time in front of laptop or desktop or television screen, the eyes may suffer too much strain. This is a great way to instantly feel refreshed and clear the vision.

What to Do?

  • Sit up straight in a comfortable position
  • Warm the hands by rubbing them together rapidly
  • Close the eyes and place the warm palms over them, without applying pressure on the eyelids
  • Relax and enjoy the darkness for about 30 seconds
  • Slowly open the eyes and look around
  • Repeat the process 3 to 5 times at a sitting
  • Follow this technique frequently throughout the day

The above home remedies are tried and tested and found to be very effective in treating eye strain problems. In case the problem persists, it is better to consult the doctor.
