Hangnails are referred to the small bits of nails that hang off the cuticles of the nails. It is usually troublesome when it snags on the clothing or while running the finger through the hair. It is an annoying problem that may occur to anyone. It mostly occurs during winters or due to other reasons.

  • Applying petroleum jelly
  • Applying lip balm
  • Moisturizing the hands and nails
  • Overnight moisturizing lotions
  • Warm oil or warm water soak
  • Trimming with cuticle scissors

However, in case of severe infection in the nails, it is better to consult the doctor and get it removed.

Home Remedies for Hangnails

1. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is one of the key nutrients for the healthy growth of nails. Vitamin E oil can be used to treat hangnails. It softens and moistens the nail beds and also facilitates healing of the skin tear.


How to Use?

  • Apply pure vitamin E oil on the problem area
  • Leave it on until it is absorbed completely
  • Reapply several times a day until you get rid of the hangnails
  • Another option is to combine vitamin E oil with any carrier oil like olive, castor or jojoba oil
  • Apply this mixture to the hangnails daily
  • To prevent hangnails, put a drop of vitamin E oil on the nail beds after clipping the nails
2. Avocado

Avocado is also an effective natural ingredient that can treat hangnails. It is rich in vitamin E, fatty acids and other important nutrients for healthy nail and skin. It acts as humectants for the skin and treats the hangnails.


How to Use?

  • Scoop out the pulp of half an avocado and mash it with a fork
  • Mix in two tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Apply this homemade hand moisturizer on the nails
  • Leave it on overnight, and then wash it off in the morning
  • Do this daily or three or four times a week on a regular basis
3. Almonds

Almonds are great for treating it as they have high vitamin E content. It also contains fatty acids that help in reducing the swelling and inflammation.


How to Use?

  • Soak a handful of almonds in water overnight
  • The next day, peel the skin and grind the almonds
  • Mix in one beaten egg yolk and a little honey
  • Before going to bed, apply the mixture on the hands and nails and put on cotton gloves
  • Leave it on overnight, and rinse it off the next morning
  • Do this a few times a week on a regular basis
4. Beewax

Beewax is yet another effective remedy for treating hangnails. It strengthens the nails and helps in moisturizing. It forms a soothing and protective layer on the skin to keep it from tearing.


How to Use?

  • Mix together one and one-half to two teaspoons each of coconut oil, almond oil and olive oil, three teaspoons of honey and three tablespoons of beeswax
  • Melt the mixture in a microwave or double boiler
  • Remove from heat and stir in a few drops of essential oils like tea tree, lavender, plantain or peppermint oil
  • Apply it on the nails and cuticles and leave it on overnight
  • Repeat daily on a regular basis
5. Manuka Honey

Honey is also effective in treating hangnails. It keeps the nailbeds moistened and thus the skin around the nails remains supple. It works as a great moisturizing agent. It is a natural humectant as it attracts and retains moisture. It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that fights infection and reduces inflammation.


How to Use?

  • Dab raw or manuka honey on the affected area
  • Leave it on for several hours to soften the cuticles
  • Do this daily until the hangnails exist
  • You can also apply honey on a regular basis to prevent hangnails
6. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory in nature. It has soothing, healing and moisturizing properties. It prevents and treats infected hangnails when used in combination with turmeric.


How to Use?

  • Apply fresh, succulent aloe vera gel extracted from an aloe leaf on the hangnails
  • Leave it on for few hours
  • Use it daily until the problem is solved
  • Mix a little turmeric powder in one teaspoon of aloe vera gel
  • Apply it on the affected area
  • Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it off
  • Repeat daily for a few days
7. Yogurt

Yogurt acts as a natural remedy to cure painful and inflamed hangnails. It has lots of good bacteria the fights infection. It is also a probiotic which has anti-inflammatory property. It also works great as a moisturizer.


How to Use?

  • Opt for yogurt with active cultures
  • Apply plain yogurt on the affected area
  • Leave it on for a few hours
  • Rinse it off using normal water
  • Repeat daily until the symptoms persist
