Home Remedies for Hair Growth

There are several home remedies which can rescue the thinning, hair loss and other scalp problem effectively.

1. Hot Oil Treatment

Hot oil treatment, once a week, is effective to combat the ill-effects of the climate and humidity on hair and promotes hair growth. It nourishes the scalp from and prevents hair fall. The heat enables the oil to penetrate deep inside the roots and improve blood circulation to the scalp.


How to Use?

  • Heat some coconut oil or olive oil in a microwave or double-boiler for few seconds
  • Massage it on the scalp and all sections of hair
  • Put hot oil on the hair and comb to ensure even distribution
  • Wear a plastic cap or wrap a warm towel
  • Leave it for at least half an hour
  • Shampoo as usual
  • Repeat this remedy once or twice a week
2. Castor Oil

Castor oil facilitates hair growth as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. The thick oil moisturizes the hair and adds volume and shine. It also prevents frizz and helps in fighting scalp infections.


How to Use?

  • It is best to mix castor oil with an equal amount of a base oil to get a better consistency and enhance the benefits
  • Rub it on the scalp and massage
  •  Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Finally, rinse it out and shampoo the hair
  • If it is difficult to remove, use a clarifying shampoo
  • To make it more effective, mix four drops of rosemary essential oil in an ounce of castor oil and then use it on the hair and scalp
3. Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry or Amla is highly effective in treating hair fall and dandruff. It stimulates the hair follicles and promotes healthy hair growth. It is also beneficial in premature graying of hair.


How to Use?

  • Heat some coconut oil in a pan and cook dried amla pieces in it until they are charred
  • Strain and cool the oil
  • Massage the hair and scalp with it
  • Leave it on for at least 30 minutes
  • Wash the hair with a mild shampoo
  • Do this on a weekly basis
  • Alternatively, you can apply a mixture of one tablespoon each of dried Indian gooseberry powder and lemon juice
  • Simply applying fresh amla juice is also useful
4. Rosemary

Rosemary is an excellent herb that promotes hair growth and strengthens the roots. It is also very effective in eliminating dandruff, the main reason for hair fall. This herb has antioxidant properties the boosts hair growth. The sulfur and silica in rosemary helps in reversing the hair loss. It improves the blood circulation to the scalp and unclogs blocked hair follicles. It also darkens the hair.


How to Use?

  • Mix two drops of rosemary essential oil in two tablespoons of a carrier oil such as olive, coconut, jojoba, almond or avocado oil
  • Apply it on the hair and massage the scalp
  • Leave it on for at least half an hour and then shampoo the hair as usual
  • You can also use rosemary water as a final hair rinse
  • To prepare it, steep two or three rosemary sprigs in two cups of hot water for about five minutes
  • If you have the dried form of the herb, boil a handful of it in water
  • Allow it to cool and then strain the infusion
  • Rinse the hair with it after shampooing
  • Either of the remedies can be followed several times a week
5. Eggs

Hair is made up of keratin, which is a form of protein that gives strength to the hair. Eggs are a great source of protein and are very effective when it comes to promoting hair growth.


How to Use?

  • Whisk two egg yolks and mix in two tablespoons of olive oil
  • Apply the mixture on the scalp and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Rinse it out with cold water and then shampoo the hair as usual
  • Alternatively, mix one egg and one-quarter cup each of plain yogurt and mayonnaise in a blender
  •  Apply this hair mask and cover the hair with a shower cap
  • Leave it on for at least half an hour before rinsing it out
6. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is considered to be great for hair growth as it is rich in protein. It contains lecithin, a compound that strengthens and moisturizes hair.


How to Use?

  • Soak a cup of fenugreek seeds in water overnight, or at least for four hours
  • Take them out of the water and grind them into a paste
  • Apply coconut oil on the hair, followed by the paste
  • Let it sit for at least an hour before rinsing it out
  • Shampoo using a mild cleanser
  • Repeat the process two or three times a week
7. Beetroot Juice

Beetroot is a vegetable that can be juiced easily and extracted through a strainer. It has protein, carotenoids, vitamin B and C, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and silica. It should be consumed regularly in order to boost hair growth.


How to Use?

  • Add few chunks of beetroot to a blender or a juicer
  • Strain the juice and drink it fresh
  • You can also combine it with juices of other vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots, coriander, lettuce, etc for added benefits
  • Prepare a healthy drink by blending together half a beet, half a cucumber, and five carrots

All the above remedies are tried and tested and found to be effective in promoting hair growth. The remedies must be followed regularly in order to promote healthy hair growth.
