Gum disease is also known as Gingivitis in medical terms. It is a common condition that is caused due to plague build up in the tooth and gum margins. It should be treated promptly because it can advance to periodontitis and lead to several complications.

Home Remedies for Gum Disease

The gum disease can be treated using several natural ingredients. The home remedies are as effective as over-the-counter medicines available for the problem. The most common way of getting rid of the pain and discomfort is a mouth rinse using warm water mixed with salt. However, there are several other remedies that can get rid of the problem faster.

1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is very effective in treating gum disease due to its strong antibacterial properties. It kills the germs and fights plaque, keeping the mouth free from bacterial infections and bad breath. It also helps in whitening and brightening the teeth. Only 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution must be used for this remedy.


How to Use?

  • Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water
  • Rinse the mouth with the solution for a few seconds, and then spit it out
  • Use it a few times a week until results are noticed
  • Alternatively, mix hydrogen peroxide little by little into one teaspoon of baking soda to make a paste
  • Put the paste on the toothbrush and gently brush it on the gums and gum line
  • Finally, spit it out and rinse the mouth
  • Use it a few times a week for a few weeks
  • You can also apply a paste of clove oil and hydrogen peroxide, leave it on for a few seconds and then spit it out
  • Do not use hydrogen peroxide too often and be careful not to swallow it
2. Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is yet another effective remedy to fight gum disease as it contains high amount of vitamin C. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology has associated lower vitmin C intake with higher rates of periodontal disease.


How to Use?

  • Simply drink about four ounces, or two tablespoons, of cranberry juice daily to help prevent bacteria from sticking to the teeth
  • Also eat more vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables, such as lemons, oranges, grapefruits, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, papaya, red pepper and broccoli
3. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is one of the Ayurvedic techniques used to get rid of oral diseases and improve overall health. It helps in strengthening the teeth and gums, get rid of plaque and relieves bad breath. It is also considered good for health as it aids in detoxification.


How to Use?

  • Swish one tablespoon of sesame oil around in the mouth and through your teeth
  • Do this for about 15 minutes or until it becomes thinner and turns milky
  • Spit it out and rinse your mouth with water
  • Repeat the process daily for about a month
  • For better results, use coconut oil for oil pulling
4. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a naturally available ingredient that has anti-inflammatory properties. It has been found to be beneficial for treating gum disease. It has antimicrobial properties that kills bacteria causing gum disease. It is also effective in curing mouth ulcers and bad breath.


How to Use?

  • Massage your gums with fresh aloe vera gel
  • Leave it on for at least half an hour
  • Rinse it off and repeat several times a day
  • Alternatively, swish some aloe vera juice around in the mouth a few times, and then spit it out
  • You can also drink about two teaspoons of aloe vera juice on a regular basis
  • Follow any of these remedies daily for several weeks
5. Myrrh

Myrrh has anti-bacterial, antiseptic and astringent properties that make it suitable for treating gum disease. It is recommended by famous herbalists as a remedy for sore gums.


How to Use?

  • Put 10 drops of myrrh tincture in a cup of warm water
  • Use it as a mouth rinse
  • You can also add a few drops of the tincture to a salt water rinse
  • Repeat once or twice a day for several days
  • Alternatively, mix equal amounts of myrrh and Echinacea tinctures
  • Use this mixture as a mouth rinse
  • Repeat daily for a few days until there is relief
6. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help in soothing irritates and inflamed gums. According to a study published in the Australian Dental Journal in 2008, topical application of tea tree oil gel helps in reducing gum bleeding and gingivitis.


How to Use?

  • Put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothpaste
  • Brush the teeth with this twice a day
  • You may also, buy toothpaste with tea tree oil in it
  • Repeat this remedy for several weeks
  • Care should be taken not to swallow the oil
7. Sea Salt

Sea salt is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It eases the pain and swelling in the gums and draws out the infection.


How to Use?

  • Mix a small amount of sea salt in a cup of warm water until it dissolves completely
  • Use it as a mouth rinse
  • Swish it around in the mouth for a few seconds
  • Repeat this three times a day until the symptoms subside

All the above remedies are tried and tested and found to be very effective in treating gum disease. It must be followed regularly to see any positive effects.
