Home Remedies to Get Rid of Brown Spots

In this rapidly changing environment, our skin goes through a lot of damages. These damages may be caused due to pollution, free radicals, exposure to Sun or aging. Staying outdoors most of the time develops brown spots on the skin that makes the skin appear darker. This is due to the increased production of cells called as melanocytes that increases melanin in the skin. These brown spots generally appear on the exposed skin areas like face, back, neck, chest, shoulders and hands.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has bleaching effects on the skin that can hide the pigmentations and dark spots. It also helps in maintaining clear and soft skin.

How to Use?

  • Apply lemon juice on the affected areas
  • Leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water
  • For people with sensitive skin, it is recommended to apply lemon juice with water, rose water or honey
  • Alternatively, you may also make a scrub by mixing equal amount of lemon juice and sugar
  • Scrub this mixture on the brown spots and leave it on for 5-10 minutes
  • Rinse it off with cold water
  • Repeat this 3-4 times a week for better results
Buttermilk

Buttermilk consists of lactic acid that helps in exfoliating the skin. It helps in removing blemishes and brown spots without drying out the skin.

How to Use?

  • Dab a cotton ball in buttermilk and apply on the brown spots
  • Leave it on for few minutes before rinsing it off
  • For oily or acne prone skin, you may also add some lemon juice to buttermilk and apply on the skin
  • Another option is to add some tomato juice to buttermilk and apply this on the skin
  • Repeat this remedy once or twice a day for few weeks to notice results
Castor Oil

Castor oil has strong healing properties that help in getting rid of the brown spots or age spots. This oil is heavy and so it should be added with other carrier oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil and vitamin E oil.

How to Use?

  • Using a cotton ball apply castor oil on the affected areas
  • Gently massage on the skin for few minutes
  • Leave it for few hours and then rinse it off
  • Repeat this twice a day to notice improvement in the skin texture and lightening of the spots
  • Another option is to mix castor oil along with any one of the carrier oils and apply on the brown spots
Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an effective remedy for a various skin diseases and aging spots. It will help in drying out and fading the dark spots.

How to Use?

  • Mix equal amount of water and apple cider vinegar and add some honey to it
  • Apply this solution on the brown spots and leave it on for few minutes
  • Wash it off with cold water
  • Repeat this process once a day for few weeks until you notice results
  • Alternatively, you may also use apple cider vinegar along with orange juice and apply on the brown spots
Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has healing properties and helps in skin rejuvenation. It repairs the dark spots caused due to exposure to the Sun.

  • Slit open an aloe leaf and extract fresh gel from it
  • Gently rub this gel on the affected areas
  • Leave it for 30 minutes before washing it off with cold water
  • Repeat this twice daily for at least a month to notice results
  • Aloe vera juice is available in the market which can be used instead of aloe vera gel
Sandalwood

Sandalwood has anti-aging and antiseptic properties that help in reducing hyper-pigmentation and brown spots.

  • Make a paste with sandalwood powder, rose water, one spoon of glycerin and lemon juice
  • Apply this pack on the affected areas and allow it to dry
  • Rinse it off with cold water and repeat this remedy once or twice a week
  • Another remedy is to make a paste using one tablespoon of orange juice, one tablespoon of lemon juice and the contents of two vitamin E capsules in two tablespoons of sandalwood powder.
  • Mix it well and apply it on the affected skin areas and leave it on for half an hour before rinsing it off
  • You may also massage a mixture of sandalwood oil and olive oil before going to the bed and leave it overnight
Papaya

Papaya has certain enzymes and alpha hydroxyl acids that exfoliates the skin and reduces dark spots and age spots. It also helps in achieving clear, acne free and bright complexion.

How to Use?

  • Rub one teaspoon of freshly grated papaya on the brown spots
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes before washing it off with warm water
  • Repeat this process twice a day for few weeks to see results
