Home Remedies for Ganglion Cysts

Ganglion cysts are also known as Bible cysts or Bible bumps. These are small, round sacs or lumps filled with viscous synovial fluid. These lumps may vary in size from being a pea-sized lump to an inch in diameter. It usually occurs over a joint or tendons in the following places,

  • Fingers
  • Wrists
  • Ankles
  • Soles of the feet

Home Remedies for Ganglion Cysts

The following are the various home remedies for ganglion cysts.

1. Turmeric

Turmeric is widely used in Indian kitchen as a part of everyday cooking. It has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the pain and swelling in the cysts. According to a study published in The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, it has been found that, curcumin present in turmeric exhibits anti-inflammatory activates by regulating cytokines, redox status, protein kinases, adhesion molecules, enzymes and many transcription factors associated with inflammation.


How to Use?

  • Apply some fresh turmeric juice directly on the affected area
  • Do this 2 or 3 times daily for several days
  • Alternatively, you can take this herb in supplement form
  • Always consult a doctor first, as it can increase the risk of bleeding if you take blood-thinning medications
2. Frankincense Oil

Frankincense oil is an effective astringent that helps in reducing the size of ganglion cysts. It also helps in preventing it from recurring and eases the pain.


How to Use?

  • Apply 2 drops of frankincense oil on the cyst
  • Cover it with a soft, clean bandage
  • Do this once daily, using a clean bandage each time, until the size has reduced
  • Continue applying the oil for a couple of weeks to reduce the risk of recurrence
3. Ginger

Ginger is effective in reducing the pain during ganglion cysts. It has strong anti-inflammatory property and helps in easing the pain and discomfort. According to a study, ginger is an anti-inflammatory agent that blocks Cox-2 activity, which likely causes pain.


How to Use?

  • Drink homemade ginger tea 2 or 3 times daily
  • Include more ginger in everyday cooking
  • Make ginger tea by cutting an inch of fresh ginger root into slices and simmer it in a cup of water for 10 minutes
  • Alternatively, you can take ginger supplements after consulting the doctor
4. Warm Compress

Warm compress reduces the discomfort and pain associated with ganglion cysts. It can be used to reduce the swelling as the heat improves the blood circulation and thereby healing the cysts. It promotes fluid drainage and speeds up the recovery process.


How to Use?

  • Soak a washcloth in warm water and wring out the excess water
  • Put this warm cloth directly on the affected area for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Repeat 3 or 4 times daily until the cyst is gone
  • This remedy can only suppress the pain and not prevent the growth of the cyst
5. Black Tea

Black tea is acidic in nature and this helps in healing ganglion cysts faster. It prevents the cysts from getting worse by reducing the pain and swelling. The tannins present in the black tea improves the skin condition and has soothing effects on the affected areas.


How to Use?

  • Dip a black tea bag in warm water for 5 minutes
  • Remove it and squeeze out the excess water
  • Hold the moist, warm tea bag over the affected area for 10 minutes
  • Repeat a few times daily for several days
6. Echinacea

Echinacea increase the level of properdine chemical in the body. This stimulates the immune system and helps in shrinking the ganglion cysts. Studies have proved that use of Echinacea increases the production of properdine.


How to Use?

  • Use any over-the-counter echinacea ointment topically to the cyst
  • Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until it is completely cured
  • You can also drink a cup of echinacea herbal tea once or twice daily for not more than a week
  • People who have an autoimmune disorder should not take this herb internally
7. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is rich in vitamin E and helps in healing ganglion cysts. IT has soothing effects on the skin and reduces the pain and swelling.


How to Use?

  • Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe plant leaf
  • Apply it directly on the affected area
  • Allow it to sit for 20 minutes
  • Rinse it off with lukewarm water
  • Use this remedy a few times daily for several days
8. Arnica

Arnica is also effective in reducing the inflammation and pain during ganglion cysts. It improves blood circulation and helps in healing the cysts faster.


How to Use?

  • Dilute arnica essential oil in an equal amount of olive or coconut oil
  • Apply it on the affected area and massage gently
  • Put a bandage over the area
  • Do this 2 or 3 times daily for several days
  • Alternatively, you can use an over-the-counter arnica cream or lotion
  • Apply a thin layer of it to the affected area a few times daily
  • Always do a patch test before using arnica as some people can be sensitive to it

The above home remedies are tried and tested and found to be effective in healing ganglion cysts. However, if it gets severe, it myst be taken to the doctor immediately.
