Foot pain affects people of all age groups. Most of the time, older people complaint about foot pain. This happens due to wear and tear of muscles and joints as the age increases. It can occur anywhere in the foot including toes, heel, sole, ankle or arch.

The foot pain can be cured using natural ways easily at home. It is not necessary to opt for expensive treatments and medicines with adverse side effects. Simple and natural ingredients can also prove to be equally effective in alleviating the pain. However, if there is a severe injury or fracture or prolonged pain in the legs, it is advisable to consult the doctor and get it diagnosed.

1. Hot and Cold Water Therapy

Hot and cold water therapy is very effective in treating foot pain. The heat from the hot water will promote blood circulation to the foot and the cold water helps in reducing inflammation.


How to Use?

  • Fill one bucket with cold water and another with bearable hot water
  • Sit in a comfortable chair, dip the feet in the hot water for three minutes
  • Repeat the same with cold water for at least 10 seconds or up to a minute
  • Repeat the whole process two or three times and end with cold foot bath
  • Another option is to apply a heat pad and an ice pack alternately for 10 minutes to reduce pain
2. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt can help in alleviating the foot pain and provide instant relief from the foot pain. When epsom salt and heat treatment is combined together, it relaxes the feet. Epsom salt is rich in magnesium which helps in reducing the foot pain.


How to Use?

  • Put two to three tablespoons of Epsom salt in a tub of warm water
  • Soak the feet in the tub for 10 to 15 minutes
  • The salt can make your feet dry, so apply some moisturizer after soaking them
3. Vinegar

Vinegar is used in various pain relieving treatments and is very effective in treating foot pain also. It is used to reduce the foot pain due to sprains and strains. It is anti-inflammatory in nature and helps in reducing inflammation.


How to Use?

  • Fill a tub with hot water and add two tablespoons of vinegar in it
  • You can also mix sea salt or Epsom salt or table salt in it
  • Soak your feet in it for about 20 minutes
  • Alternatively, put a mixture of equal amounts of vinegar and water in two containers
  • Use cold water in one and hot water in the other
  • Soak a towel in the hot mixture, squeeze out the excess liquid
  • Wrap it around your foot and leave it for five minutes
  • Do the same using the cold mixture
  • Repeat the whole process at least three or four times daily
4. Clove Oil

Clove oil is very effective in treating headaches, joint pain, athlete’s foot, nail fungus and foot pain. It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties that helps in treating foot pain completely. It also boosts circulation.


How to Use?

  • For quick relief, gently massage your aching feet with clove oil
  • This will stimulate blood flow and relax the muscles
  •  Massage the feet and heels with clove oil several times a day
  • If you have sensitive skin or a cut, dilute three drops of clove oil with one teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and then massage the feet with it
5. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is rich in capsaicin which has strong anti-inflammatory property. It relieves muscle aches and pains, arthritis, muscle strain, lower back pain and aching feet.


How to Use?

  • For feet ache due to cold, sprinkle some cayenne pepper in your socks before putting them on
  • This will help keeping the feet warm
  • Another treatment is to add one-half teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder to half a bucket of hot water
  • Soak the feet in it for a few minutes
  • This will have a soothing effect and provides relief from pain
  • Repeat this once a day until the pain is gone
6. Ice Therapy

Ice is also an effective way to reduce the pain and swelling in the feet. The cold temperature will numb the nerve ending in the affected are and provide instant relief from the pain. However, it should not be used for a long time as it can permanently damage the skin and tissues.


How to Use?

  • Put a small amount of crushed ice in a small plastic bag
  • Use it to massage the affected area in a circular motion
  • You can also use a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a thin towel
  • Do not use an ice pack for more than 10 minutes at a time
7. Mustard Seeds

Mustard seeds are also helpful in treating the foot pain. It removes toxins from the body and improves blood circulation. It helps in reducing inflammation and provides relief from the pain and swelling.


How to Use?

  • Grind some mustard seeds
  • Add them to half a bucket of warm water
  • Soak your feet in the water for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Pat dry the feet

The above home remedies used to treat foot pain are tried and tested and found to be extremely beneficial in treating all sorts of foot pain. The remedies must be followed consistently at least for few weeks or couple of months to notice results.
