1. Yoga and Meditation

Yoga and meditation have been proven to be very effective in controlling fibromyalgia. According to a study conducted by the Oregon Health & Science University, it was found that yoga can help combat fibromyalgia symptoms like pain, stiffness, fatigue, poor sleep, poor memory, anxiety, depression and poor balance. Yoga also helps in increasing the cortisol levels in female suffering from fibromyalgia. This improves mindfulness and reduces pain.

What to Do?

  • Practice yoga for 20 to 40 minutes daily
  • Join a tai chi class
  • Do mindfulness meditation for 20 to 30 minutes daily
  • Deep relaxation techniques like progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery may also help
2. Exercise

Exercise is found to be very effective in reducing the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It prevents muscle wasting and restores the body’s neurochemical balance. This in turn boosts the levels of pain-fighting chemicals called endorphins. It also triggers a positive emotional state and reduces stress.

What to Do?

  • Start with about 20 minutes of low-impact exercises 3 times a week
  • Then increase the duration and frequency
  • Include walking, seated exercises, strength exercises, flexibility exercises, balance exercises and water aerobics
  • Do mild exercises to keep the symptoms from flaring
  • Stretching and activities like stairs climbing, gardening also helps on dealing with this problem
3. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt or magnesium sulfate is very effective in getting rid of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It mostly occurs due to magnesium deficiency in the body. An epsom salt bath helps in reducing the pain and relaxes the body.

  • Mix 2 cups of Epsom salt in warm bathwater

4. Massage

Massage is natural and most effective way to relax the muscles. It improves the range of motion in the joints. It also relieves stress and stimulates production of chemicals that acts as natural pain killers in the body. 5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats that help in decreasing the inflammation and neuropathic pain associated with fibromyalgia. It also curbs joint stiffness and pain.

  • Take 1 to 2 tablespoons of fish oil daily
  • Also, eat fatty fish like herring, sardines, anchovies, tuna or wild salmon 2 or 3 times a week
  • Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include flaxseeds, walnuts, canola oil and soybean oil
  • You can opt for fish oil or omega-3 supplements after consulting the doctor for the proper dosage
6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps in maintain the pH levels in the body. It reduces oxidative stress and improves circulation. It also helps in reducing fibromyalgia symptoms like gastrointestinal issues, fatigue, headache, joint pain, swelling and inflammation.

  • Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a glass of water
  • Optionally, add a little honey
  • Drink it twice daily
  • Start by taking one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and gradually increase the dosage
7. Turmeric

Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps in treating fibromyalgia accompanied by rheumatic disease. It contains a compound called curcumin that relieves pain and stiffness.

What to Do?

  • Mix ½ to 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in 1 cup of milk
  • Heat it to a boil, then allow it to cool
  • Drink it once or twice daily
  • You can also include turmeric in your cooking
  • Another option is to take this herb in supplement form, 400 to 600 mg 3 times a day
  • Consult the doctor for proper dosage

The above home remedies are highly effective in treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It must be followed regularly over a period of time to see positive results. Also, one should consult the doctor to check if any of the ingredients interfere with the prescribed medicines.
