Eyelid cysts, medically known as chalazion, are small lumps that appear under the skin of the eyelids. This is mainly due to a blocked oil gland under the eyelids. It may appear on the lower or upper eyelids. It commonly occurs in adults than in children. This is a non-contagious disease which is slightly larger and less painful than a sty.

Common Causes of Eyelid Cysts

The following are the common causes if eyelid cycts.

  • Blockage of oil glands
  • Inflammation of oil-producing meibomian glands
  • History of chalazion

Symptoms of Eyelid Cysts

The following are the signs and symptoms of eyelid cysts.

  • Localized hard lump
  • Swelling in eyelids
  • Spreading of the inflammation to area around
  • Occasional pain
  • Irritation
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • May obstruct vision

Healing Time

Eyelid cysts or Chalazions mostly heal on their own. It may take around 2 to 8 weeks to heal. It is important to consult the doctor and start proper treatment to heal it faster.

Home Remedies for Eyelid Cysts

1. Warm Compress

Warm compress is one of the most effective remedies for any sort of inflammation. It improves the blood circulation in the affected area and promotes proper drainage of the gland. It also reduces the pain and swelling in that area.


How to Use?

  • Soak a clean soft cloth in sterilized hot water
  • Wring out the excess water
  • Hold this warm, moist cloth on the closed eyelid for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Repeat 3 to 4 times a day for at least two weeks
  • Alternatively, you can also try facial steaming
2. Guava Leaves

Guava leaves are also helpful in getting rid of the eyelid cysts effectively. It contains anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing the pain and swelling. Also it has natural healing compounds that help in faster healing.


How to Use?

  • Wash 5 or 6 guava leaves thoroughly
  • Warm these leaves in the microwave for a few seconds
  • You may also simply put them in boiling water for 5 minutes
  • Place one warm leaf on the affected eye
  • Place a damp, warm cloth over it
  • When the leaf cools down, replace it with a new warm leaf
  • Repeat this remedy twice daily for several days
3. Acacia Leaves

Acacia leaves infusion is yet another effective remedy for eyelid cysts. It reduces the pain and swelling caused during the cysts. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties that help in curing the eyelid cysts at a faster pace.


How to Use?

  • Wash thoroughly a handful of acacia leaves
  • Heat 2 cups of water and boil a handful of acacia leaves in it
  • When the solution is comfortably warm, remove the leaves
  • Soak a piece of clean cloth in the solution
  • Use this as a warm compress
  • Repeat a few times a day for several days
4. Massage

Massage is a great way to relieve the swelling in the eyelids due to cysts. It can be done using any carrier oil. This promotes the blood circulation in that area and thus leads to faster healing.


How to Use?

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap
  • Apply a warm compress on your closed eyelid for 5 minutes
  • Using your fingers, gently massage the area in the upward direction
  • Massage for 2 to 3 minutes a few times daily
  • You may also use olive oil or coconut oil infused with few drops of lavender essential oil for the massage
5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has positive results in reducing the swelling and pain caused due to eyelid cysts. It has been tried and tested and found to be effective by many. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that fights infection and thus relieves the pain during eyelid cysts.


How to Use?

  • Add 2 teaspoons of organic raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of hot water
  • Soak a cotton ball in this solution
  • Apply it on the affected area for about a minute
  • Follow this remedy three times daily for a few days
  • Also, you may mix 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a cup of water
  • Drink it twice daily for a few weeks
6. Castor Oil

Castor oil helps in reducing the size of the cysts faster. It promotes healing due to its anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties. It can also be sued to massage the eyelids for positive results.


How to Use?

  • First, apply a warm compress over the affected eyelid for 5 minutes
  • Use a cotton swab to apply castor oil on the affected area
  • Follow this remedy twice daily for 1 to 2 weeks
  • Alternatively, mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder with enough castor oil to make a thick paste
  • After washing the cyst with warm water, apply this paste on the affected area
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes, before rinsing with warm water
  • Repeat three times daily until results are seen

The above given remedies are highly useful in treating eyelid cysts but if the problem persists or in case of severe pain, it is advisable to consult a doctor to get it diagnosed properly. This can be taken safely along with the prescribed medicines since these are completely natural and has no side effects.
