Home Remedies for Eye Sty

Eye sty is also known as hordeolum in medical terms. It is acute infection of the oil glands of the eyelids. It is caused due to dirt, makeup or debris blocking the oil glands with bacteria. It is a form of acute infection the may eventually form a head filled with pus. The bacteria named as staphylococcus is responsible for most of the cases of eye sty.

Sty is characterized by a pus-filled, pimple-like bump on eyelids. It is developed mostly on the outer edges of the eyelids. However, it may occur on the inner region.

Factors Causing Eye Sty

The following are the factors that lead to eye sty or that aggravated existing infection.

  • Blepharitis – an inflammation of the eyelash follicles
  • Poor hygiene
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes


Symptoms of Eye Sty

The following are the common symptoms of eye sty.

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • Difficult blinking
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Mucus discharge

The eye stys usually subsides within one or two weeks. With proper treatment and natural remedies, the healing process speeds up and the pain is relieved.

Home Remedies for Eye Sty

The following are the home remedies for eye sty.

1. Warm Compress

Applying warm compress to the affected area of the eyelids is very effective in treating eye sty. The heat improves the blood circulation to the area and speeds up the formation of heads. It becomes easier to drain the pus after the head is formed. This also helps in reducing the pain and swelling.


What to Do?

  • Dip a clean towel in hot water and wring out the excess water
  • Close the eyes and place the warm compress on the affected eyelid
  • Hold it for five minutes at a time
  • Repeat this remedy three or four times daily, until the pus is released
  • Wipe away the pus using a clean towel
  • Reapply the warm compress until pus stops coming out
2. Turmeric

Turmeric is wonder herb that has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It is very effective in getting rid of the sty in a short span. It reduces inflammation and removes infection-causing elements that contribute to the condition.


What to Do?

  • Add one tablespoon of turmeric to two cups of water
  • Boil it until the solution is reduced to half
  • Cool and then strain it through a cheese cloth
  • Use this solution to wash the affected eye area
  • Repeat two or three times daily for a few days
  • You can also mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk
  • Drink it daily before going to bed for a week for faster healing
3. Coriander Seeds

Coriander seeds are traditionally used in treating eye sty and the inflammation associated with it. It can reduce the pain, redness and swelling and heals the eye sty in a short time period.


What to Do?

  • Add one teaspoon of coriander seeds to one cup of water and bring it to a boil
  • Remove from heat and allow the water to cool down
  • Strain and then use this water to wash the affected eye area
  • Do this two or three times daily until you get relief
4. Green Tea

Green tea has natural anti-oxidant that promotes healing and provides relief in case of eye sty. It has anti-inflammatory compounds that reduces the pain and swelling and ultimately diminishes the sty. It is also rich in tannic acid that is very effective in keeping the infections at bay.


What to Do?

  • Dip a green tea bag in warm water for a few minutes
  • Remove and squeeze out the excess water
  • Close the eyes and press the moist tea bag over the affected eyelid
  • Hold it in place for five minutes
  • Repeat this a few times daily until the sty is reduced in size and there is no pain
  • This remedy can also be done with black tea bags
5. Baby Shampoo

The area affected by sty must be kept clean and free from dust and other irritants. It can be done using a baby shampoo as it is mild and effective in proper cleansing.


What to Do?

  • Add a few drops of mild baby shampoo to a cup of warm water
  • Mix it well so that the baby shampoo is diluted
  • Soak a cotton ball in the solution
  • Close the eyes and use the wet cotton ball to wash the eyelid along the base of your eyelashes
  • Rinse the area with warm water
  • Apply a clean, warm compress for five minutes
  • Do this a few times a day
6. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is yet another popular home remedy when it comes to treating eye sty. It has soothing effects on the inflamed skin. It has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is very effective in reducing redness, swelling and inflammation and speeds up the healing process.


What to Do?

  • Cut open a leaf from an aloe vera plant and extract the gel from it
  • Rub the gel over the infected eyelid
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes
  • Wash your eye area with lukewarm water
  • Repeat this remedy a few times daily for at least a week
7. Castor Oil

Castor oil has ricinoleic acid which is also anti-inflammatory agent. It is very effective in healing the eye sty by reducing the pain and inflammation.


What to Do?

  • Wash the affected eye area with baby shampoo and warm water
  • Apply a warm compress over the affected eyelid for five minutes
  • Use a cotton swab to apply castor oil on the raised bump on the eyelid
  • Repeat twice daily for a few days

The above home remedies are highly effective in getting rid of the eye sty. If it still persists, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
