Dry mouth is known as Xerostomia in medical terms. It is a common problem experienced by the people. It is mainly due to the change in composition of the saliva or reduced salivary flow.

Reasons for Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is associated with the improper functioning of the salivary glands due to the following reasons.

  • Aging
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Snoring
  • Depression
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Hormonal changes


Dry mouth can also be due to the following medical reasons,

Home Remedies for Dry Mouth

There are several natural ways by which this problem can be addressed. The following are the various home remedies for dry mouth.

1. Fluids

One of the main reasons for dry mouth is dehydration. It is important to stay hydrated all the time. The best thing one can do to prevent or treat dry mouth is to increase the fluid intake in a day. This will induce more saliva and hence treat the dry mouth problem.

What to Do?

  • Drink enough water throughout the day
  • You may also suck on small pieces of ice
  • You may also freeze water-based fruits like pineapple, watermelon and cucumber into chunks and eat them from time to time
  • Drink fruit smoothies
  • Vegetable juices also help in fighting dry mouth
  • Drink herbal teas like green tea, chamomile tea and other teas
  • Take a lot of soups and stews
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages like sodas and alcoholic drinks.
2. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds contain flavonoids that stimulate the flow of saliva and helps in getting rid of dry mouth. The pleasant aroma of these seeds also helps in getting rid of bad breath.

What to Do?

  • Chew a spoonful of fennel seeds several times a day
  • You may also mix together fennel seeds and fenugreek seeds and dry roast them
  • Grind them thoroughly and add a little salt
  • Eat half-a-spoon of this mixture after every meal
3. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is ancient Ayurvedic practices that helps in maintaining the oral health and eliminate bad breathe. It is very helpful in treating dry mouth as it helps in keeping the mouth moist. It can be done using coconut oil, sesame oil or any other vegetable oil.

What to Do?

  • Put one tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth
  • Swish the oil around the mouth thoroughly for about 15 minutes
  • Spit it out and rinse the mouth with warm water
  • Brush the teeth as usual
  • Repeat this process every morning before eating or drinking anything
  • Be careful not to swallow the oil
4. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper stimulates saliva production and so it is one of the best remedies for dry mouth. It also helps in bolstering the taste buds and makes it more responsive to tastes like sour, sweet, salty and bitter flavors.

What to Do?

  • Wet a finger and take some cayenne pepper
  • Rub it around the tongue and keep the mouth open
  • This may cause burning sensation but it will immediately stimulate the salivary glands
  • You may also use cayenne pepper by sprinkling it on soups, salads and other dishes
  • Also, you may consider taking cayenne pepper capsules after consulting the doctor
5. Slippery Elm

Slippery elm contains mucilage that becomes a slick gel when mixed with water. This gel helps in coating and soothing the mouth as well as the throat. It can also effectively relieve many discomforts associated with dry mouth.


What to Do?

  • Add one or two tablespoons of slippery elm to a cup of water
  • Allow it to steep for at least 10 minutes
  • Strain the mixture and add honey to it before drinking
  • Alternatively, you may also make a paste by mixing slippery elm bark powder with just enough water
  • Apply it inside the mouth and leave it on for few minutes before rinsing the mouth
  • Repeat this once or twice a day
6. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used since ages to relieve dry mouth symptoms. It helps in protecting the sensitive tissues in the mouth and enhances the taste buds.

What to Do?

  • Drink quarter cup of aloe vera juice daily
  • You may also use aloe vera juice to rinse the mouth 3 to 4 times a day
  • You can also apply pure aloe vera gel around the mouth using a cotton swab
  • Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse it off with cold water
  • Do this 2 to 3 times a day to notice improvement

The above home remedies are highly effective in curing dry mouth. However, if dry mouth persists for a longer period of time, it is better to get it diagnosed for other underlying health issues.
