Home Remedies to Treat Dry Hair

There are various simple and natural home remedies to prevent dry hair problem. These remedies will help in restoring the natural shine and health of the hair and prevent breakage.

1. Olive Oil

Olive oil is one the age old remedies to maintain long and healthy hair. It is very nourishing and helps in keeping the luster and shine of the hair intact. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E that helps in treating the dry and damaged hair by sealing the cuticle or the outer layer with moisture.


How to Use?

  • Take one or two tablespoons of olive oil in a glass bowl and heat it in a microwave for few seconds
  • Apply it on the scalp and hair shafts
  • Massage it for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Cover the hair with a warm towel and leave it for 30 minutes
  • You may also leave the hair overnight after oiling
  • Rinse the hair using a mild shampoo and follow it with a conditioner
  • Repeat this at least once a week to nourish the hair from the roots
  • Olive oil can also be replaced with coconut oil, almond oil, castor oil or jojoba oil for the hot oil treatment
2. Mayonnaise

  • Take one cup of full-fat mayonnaise and apply a thick layer on slightly damp hair and scalp

  • Cover the hair and head with a plastic cap for about an hour
  • Rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water
  • Shampoo the hair using a mild hair cleanser

3. Eggs

Eggs are very helpful in treating dry and damaged hair. It is agood source of protein and lecithin which is essential for healthy hair growth. It also adds shine and improves the texture of the hair.


How to Use?

  • Mix together two eggs and with one tablespoon of olive oil and honey
  • Apply this mixture to the damp hair and scalp
  • Cover the head with a shower cap for about 30 minutes
  • Rinse the hair using a mild shampoo in cold water
  • You may also directly massage the whipped eggs to the scalp for few minutes
  • Cover the hair and leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing it off
4. Beer

Beer has numerous benefits for the hair as it conditions the hair very well. It consists of proteins that help in repairing the dry and damaged hair. It helps in achieving shiny, soft and bouncy hair.


How to Use?

  • Shampoo the hair as usual
  • Follow it by rinsing the hair with beer
  • Do not rinse after using beer and allow it to dry
  • You may also spray some beer before blow drying or styling the hair
  • The smell of the beer goes off once it dries naturally
5. Avocado

Avocado is the most nutritious fruit with saturated fats, vitamin A and E, proteins and other minerals. It is very effective in achieving a flawless skin and healthy hair. It locks in the moisture in the hair shafts making them look shinier and healthier.


How to Use?

  • Mash one ripe avocado and mix one teaspoon of wheat-germ oil and jojoba oil to make a smooth paste
  • Apply this mixture on the hair after shampoo
  • Cover the hair with a shower cap and allow it for an hour
  • Rinse the hair and repeat this once a week
  • You may also make a hair pack by mixing one rip avocado with two tablespoons of olive oil and mix it until the consistency is thick and smooth
  • Apply this pack and leave it on for 30 minutes before the final rinse
6. Banana

Bananas are rich in potassium and moisture content that prevents dry hair and repairs the hair from the roots. It also softens the hair and improves the elasticity preventing it from breakage.


How to Use?

  • Mash one ripe banana and apply it on the hair and scalp
  • Leave it on for an hour and rinse it off using lukewarm water
  • Alternatively, you may also make a paste by mixing one overripe banana, once tablespoon of almond oil and two tablespoons of honey and blend it well
  • Apply this hair mask and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes
  • Rinse it off with lukewarm water and repeat this remedy once a week to get soft and shiny hair
