Home Remedies for Denture Pain

Dentures are false teeth that are replaced during tooth loss. It may be partial or complete depending on the number of teeth replaced. This may cause pain and discomfort in the initial stages. It is reported that at least 50 percent of all denture wearers experience this issue at least once.

Symptoms of Denture Pain

The first time denture wearers may experience the following signs and symptoms of denture pain,

  • Extreme pain
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Red sores on the gums under the dentures
  • White patches of yeast in the mouth
  • Dry mouth
  • Gums that appear to grow over the dentures


Common causes of Denture Pain

The following are the common causes of denture pain.

  • Presence of bacteria in the mouth or on the dentures
  • Ill-fitting dentures
  • Low-quality dentures
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Eating hard food
  • Cracks in the dentures

Dentures may not fit too perfectly, but it does not mean that the wearer has to suffer with pain. There are several natural ways to ease the pain and resolve the issue completely.

Home Remedies for Denture Pain

The following are the tried and tested home remedies for alleviating denture pain.

1. Salt

Salt provides great relief to the denture wearers during the adjustment phase. It also helps in reducing the swelling and pain in the gums. It reduces the risk of mouth sores or dry mouth bu inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the mouth.


How to Use?

  • Remove the dentures and gently rub the gums with salt for a few seconds
  • Rinse it off with warm water and repeat this everyday for a few weeks
  • Also, you may add half teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and use it as a mouth rinse
  • Rinse the mouth with this solution twice a day until the swelling reduces
2. Black Tea

Black tea has lot of antioxidants that help in treating denture pain. It kills the harmful bacteria present in the mouth and heals the swelling faster. Even the used black tea bags are of great help when it comes to treating denture pain as it consists of tannic acid, an astringent the reduces the pain and swelling of the gums.


How to Use?

  • Dip a black tea bag in a cup of hot water for 5 minutes and allow it to steep
  • Remove the tea bag and let it cool down
  • Hold it on the affected gum area for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Rinse the mouth with lukewarm water
  • Repeat once or twice daily until the symptoms reduce
  • Care should be taken that the person following this remedy must not eat or drink anything before and during this treatment.
3. Cloves

Cloves contain Eugenol, which is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic compound. It is very effective for treating dentures and the pain and swelling during this period. It acts similar to a pain reliever and also helps in disinfecting the mouth.


How to Use?

  • Grind few cloves into powder
  • Take half spoon of the freshly ground cloves powder
  • Add few drops if olive oil to it and mix it
  • Apply this paste around the sore gums
  • Wait for 5 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water
  • Repeat this twice daily until the dentures do not cause any pain or discomfort
4. Turmeric

Turmeric has a compound named curcumin which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in reducing pain, swelling and inflammation of the gums. It also prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth.


How to Use?

  • Make a paste by mixing 1/4th teaspoon of turmeric powder and few drops of water
  • Apply this paste to the problematic area in the gums
  • Allow it to work for 5 minutes
  • Gradually massage the gums using fingertips for few minutes
  • Rinse the mouth thoroughly with lukewarm water
  • Repeat this remedy twice a day at least for a week
5. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is yet another effective remedy whenit comes to treating denture pain. It has anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties. It restricts the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth and has a soothing effect on the gums.


How to Use?

  • Slit open a fresh aloe vera leaf and extract the gel from it
  • Apply it directly on the gums using a cotton ball
  • Leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse the mouth with cold water
  • Avoid eating anything for at least an hour after this remedy
  • In case of dry mouth, drink one-fourth cup of aloe vera juice daily until the problem subsides
  • Prepare the juice by blending two tablespoons of aloe vera gel in a cup of water or any citrus juice like orange
6. Massage

Massage is an excellent way to reduce the pain and swelling in the gums. It encourages blood circulation and thereby relieves pain. Any light oil can be used for massage. However, olive oil is considered to be the best as it has anti-inflammatory properties.


How to Use?

  • Rub some olive oil directly on the gums
  • Using the index finger gently massage the gum for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Leave it for 5 minutes before rinsing the mouth with lukewarm water
  • Repeat his remedy twice or thrice a day until the pain is relieved

Follow the above remedies to get rid of the denture pain. If the pain is severe or continues for a longer period, it is better to seek medical help.
