Unexplained or intermittent crying one or two times a day by a healthy well-fed child is defined as colic in babies. Mostly the crying bouts last for a few hours every day or may occur thrice for three or more weeks. It is a problem found in 5 to 25 percent of the infants. Babies, who are two or three months old, have this problem. However it gradually resolves within a few months when the baby is 4 to 6 months old.

1. Warm Bath

Giving the baby a warm bath during colic help in soothing the symptoms. It also helps in distracting the baby and getting  good sleep.

  • Fill the bathtub with warm water
  • Add a few drops of lavender oil
  • Bathe the baby in this water
  • Massage the tummy area gently to relieve painful trapped gas
  • Dry the bay and rock gently to help him sleep
2. Warm Compress

Warm compress is yet another effective method of healing colic fast. This can be used on the baby’s tummy area to provide relief from the trapped gas.

  • Damp a soft towel in warm water and wring out the excess water
  • Place a warm towel on the baby tummy
  • Also you may rub the warm towel on the baby’s tummy in circular motions for few minutes
  • Follow this remedy twice a day to assist gas movement

3. Oil Massage

4. Knee Pushing Exercise

  • Slowly bend the legs at the knees

  • Add a pinch of asafetida powder to one tablespoon of water

  • Rub this solution around the baby’s navel twice or thrice a day
  • Babies who have started to eat solid food, a mix of asafetida powder in the food must be given before feeding
  • Breastfeeding mothers can add half a teaspoon of asafetida to a glass of warm water and drink it twice daily
7. Basil

Basil is highly beneficial when it comes to treating colic. It is high in eugenol, which has antispasmodic and sedative properties that expels gas and ease other gastrointestinal discomforts.

  • Add one teaspoon of dried basil leave to a cup of boiling water and allow it to steep for 10 minutes
  • Strain and allow it to cool the mixture and give one or two teaspoon to the baby a few times daily
  • Breastfeeding mothers can also drink this tea twice or thrice daily
  • Another good option is to grind one tablespoon of basil leaves with a little water and make a paste
  • Apply this paste on the baby’s navel and abdomen and allow it to dry
  • Then gently wipe it off with a wet tissue
  • Repeat this as and when needed
8. Fennel Seeds

Fennel is a great ingredient for colicky babies. It relieves gas and alleviates stomach-related discomforts. Both mothers and babies can reap benefits of fennel seeds.

  • Add one teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to one cup of hot water
  • Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes and then strain the mixture
  • Breastfeeding mothers can drink this tea twice or thrice a day
  • Small babies can be given half to one teaspoon of this herbal tea thrice a day
