Spring Ailments Home Remedies

Spring ailments refers to those allergies which generally occur during spring time. These ailments are caused primarily by the presence of pollen in the environment but there can be other reason as well.

The most common types of spring ailments are mentioned as follows:

a) Seasonal Allergies (also known as Hay Fever)

b) Asthma

c) Lyme Disease

A detailed description for each one of these is required for further analysis.

A.  Hay Fever

It is also known as allergic rhinitis. This condition occurs when the immune system responds to irritants in the air that enter the body through the air passages. This leads to an allergic reaction to pollen and molds in the air leading to hay fever.

Hay fever is not fatal or life threatening but it can definitely create complications for the person’s day to day activities due to the nasty symptoms its produces.

Symptoms will appear soon after the person has been affected or exposed by to the allergens. The most common symptoms would be sneezing, cough, nasal congestion, headache, itchy eyes, fatigue and swollen blue colored patch underneath the eyes. Hay fever can occur at any age, but in many cases it is known to develop during childhood or early adulthood. The severity of the allergic reactions may also vary over the years. Many people notice a diminishing of the symptoms over several years. The signs and symptoms of spring ailments may sometimes be confused with the common cold. In case of a common cold however, you would notice a thicker nasal discharge and fever.

The main reason as to why hay fever takes place is due to the “over-sensitization” of the immune system. It means that the immune system mistakes the non-harmful particles or substances to be potentially harmful and launches attack on them through antibodies. When these antibodies sense exposure to allergens, they send signals back to the immune system to release certain chemical in the blood stream to fight them off.

These are the chemicals which cause reaction that develop into symptoms of hay fever. The most common triggers/allergens of hay fever are grass pollen, weed pollen, spores, dander from pets.

You doctor can usually diagnose hay fever from your typical symptoms that can occur during the hay fever season. They may also ask if there is a history of hay fever, asthma or eczema in your family.

Allergy medications are available in various forms like pills, inhalers or liquid. Some of the most common treatment methods are mentioned below:

1) Antihistamines

These medications block a chemical known as “histamine” which is released by the immune system during allergic reaction leading to the symptoms of hay fever.

2) Nasal Sprays

Antihistamine nasal sprays help relieve sneezing, itchy or runny nose, sinus congestion, and postnasal drip. Side effects of antihistamine nasal sprays may include a bitter taste, drowsiness or fatigue.

3) Eyedrops

Antihistamine eyedrops, available as over-the-counter or prescription medicines, can ease itchy, red, swollen eyes. These drops may have a combination of antihistamines and other medicines. Side effects may include headache and dry eyes. If antihistamine drops sting or burn, try keeping them in the refrigerator or using refrigerated artificial-tear drops before you use the medicated drops.

B) Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs.

If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness.

It is characterized by episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. The sputum that is produced during this time may look like white pus which happens due to high amount of white blood cells in it which is known as eosinophils.

It has the same causes as hay fever since they are under the same category of spring ailments. Here is a list of all the possible causes:

Airborne allergens, such as pollen, animal dander, mold, cockroaches and dust mites.

Respiratory infections, such as the common cold.

Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma).

Cold air.

Air pollutants and irritants, such as smoke.

Certain medications, including beta blockers, aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen (Aleve).

Strong emotions and stress.

Sulfites and preservatives added to some types of foods and beverages, including shrimp, dried fruit, processed potatoes, beer and wine.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acids back up into your throat.

Diagnosis for this involves a physical examination which can help rule out other similar conditions. The doctor can also inquire about previous medical history to make a diagnosis.

After the physical exam, the doctor may carry out the following tests to check for any lung infection:

1) Spirometry

This test estimates the narrowing of your bronchial tubes by checking how much air you can exhale after a deep breath and how fast you can breathe out.

2) Peak Flow

A peak flow meter is a simple device that measures how hard you can breathe out. Lower than usual peak flow readings are a sign your lungs may not be working as well and that your asthma may be getting worse. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to track and deal with low peak flow readings.

2) Leukotriene Modifiers

These oral medications like montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate) and zileuton (Zyflo)  help relieve asthma symptoms for up to 24 hours. They do have some nasty side effects though, so proper consultatoin with the doctor is required before taking them.

Lyme is called “The Great Imitator,” because its symptoms mimic many other diseases. It can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart.

Patients with Lyme disease are frequently misdiagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and various psychiatric illnesses, including depression. Misdiagnosis with these other diseases may delay the correct diagnosis and treatment as the underlying infection progresses unchecked.

Early symptoms of Lyme’s disease includes fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue and nausea and joint pain. Some patient’s might even suffer from Bell’s palsy which is when the facial muscles become weak and the face starts drooling. A rash in the shape of a bull’s eye is the most apparent give away of Lyme’s disease.

Lyme disease is caused by four main species of bacteria: Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia mayonii, Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii bacteria. Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii cause Lyme disease in the United States, while Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are the leading causes of Lyme disease in Europe and Asia. The most common tick-borne illness in these regions, Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick, commonly known as a deer tick.

Certain lab tests are done for proper diagnosis of this disease. They are as follows:

1) Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay ( ELISA ) Test:

This test detects the presence of antibodies against B.burgdorferi. The test results can sometimes be fake since there are high chances for misdiagnosis for Lyme’s disease. The classic bull’s eye rash symptoms can make things much easier though.

2) Western Blot Test

If ELISA test is positive, this is the confirmation test that is carried out. In this two-step approach, the Western blot detects antibodies to several proteins of B. burgdorferi.

Treatment can involve the use of antibiotics. Oral antibiotics are used like doxycycline for adults and children older than 8, or amoxicillin or cefuroxime for adults, younger children, and pregnant or breast-feeding women. A 14- to 21-day course of antibiotics is usually recommended, but some studies suggest that courses lasting 10 to 14 days are equally effective.

If the disease involves the central nervous system, your doctor might recommend treatment with an intravenous antibiotic for 14 to 28 days. This is effective in eliminating infection, although it may take you some time to recover from your symptoms. Intravenous antibiotics can cause various side effects though.
