Schizophrenia Home Remedies

This is a mental disorder that make it difficult for the person to believe or understand reality. Schizophrenia attacks come in episodes or bouts. At the starting of an episode, people might feel some difference around them in the world. They will start to experience trouble in concentrating, thinking or communicating clearly or taking part in their day to day life activities. At the most severe times, they may experience total seclusion from reality known as psychosis. These could be anywhere from hallucinations which are sensations that aren’t really present to delusions which are strong beliefs that have no meaning in reality. After the episodes end they may still feel restless, withdraw from others or have a hard time  concentrating.

The exact effect and severity of Schizophrenia is different for different people. Some people only experience one episode in their lifetime while others can experience many more. Some people experience a psychotic episode without warning while others experience many early warning signs. No matter how someone experiences schizophrenia, researchers agree that early treatment can help reduce the impact of episodes in the future.

Untreated schizophrenia can lead to persistent problems utimately culminating into psychosis. The symptoms are as follows:

1) Confusion

When acutely ill people with psychotic symptoms experience disorderd thinking. Our actins and thought processes for everday lives becomes confused and problematic.

2) Delusion

This is defined as a false belief that is held by a person even if has no meaning in the the real world and others don’t believe in the same.

3) Hallucinations

They are described as feelings which are not really present. A person may see things which in real world would not actually be present. Hallucinations can also lead to disembodied voices that no one else can see.

Schizophrenia can be caused by a number of both environmental as well as genetic factors. People with a family history of schizophrenia have a 20-40% of being diagnosed with it. Some of the known causes along with their explanations are given below:

1) Genetics

Schizophrenia tends to run in families with a long medical history of that disease even thought there is no one particular gene that is responsible for causing it. It can be understood as the combination of various gene factors.

Evidence the disorder is partly inherited comes from studies of twins. Identical twins share the same genes. In identical twins, if one twin develops schizophrenia, the other twin has a one in two chance of developing it too. This is true even if they are raised separately.

2) Neurotransmitters

These are those transmitters that carry messages between brain cells. There is a connection between neurotransmitters and schizophrenia because drugs that alter neurotransmitters in the brain are known to relieve some of the factors of schizophrenia.

Research suggests that two types of neurotransmitters i.e dopamine and serotonin are responsible for causing schizophrenia. An imbalance between the two has also been accepted as the basis of this problem.

3) Substance Abuse

More than 50% of people who develop schizophrenia, tend to be drug users and alcoholics. Certain drugs like amphetamine, cocaine, and to some extent alcohol can lead to stimulant psychosis which is extremely similar to schizophrenia.

Cannabis has been shown to be particularly potent in causing schizophrenia in people who are already at risk. Three major studies have shown teenagers under 15 who use cannabis regularly, especially “skunk” and other more potent forms of the drug, are up to four times more likely to develop schizophrenia by the age of 26.

To be diagnosed with schizophrenia, two criterias have to be met. These two criterias are mentioned in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. These two criterias have to met over the entire period of one month. A second symptom could be negative symptoms or severely disorganized or catatonic behaviour.

The first-line psychiatric treatment for schizophrenia is antipsychotic medication, which can reduce the positive symptoms of psychosis in about 7 to 14 days. Antipsychotics, however, fail to significantly improve the negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction. In those on antipsychotics, continued use decreases the risk of relapse. There is little evidence regarding effects from their use beyond two or three years.

The choice of which antipsychotic to use is based on benefits, risks, and costs. It is debatable whether, as a class, typical or atypical antipsychotics are better
