Scabies Home Remedies

Scabies is a contagious infection of the skin that is caused by the infestation of the mite known as “Sarcoptes scabiei”. This leads to intense itching and this urge is especially strong in the night time. Scabies has an incubation period of two to six weeks. Scabies infection starts when the female mite burrows herself in the skin to lay eggs.

Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through close physical contact in a family, child care group, school class, nursing home or prison. Because of the contagious nature of scabies, doctors often recommend treatment for entire families or contact groups.

The most common way in which scabies spreads is through long periods of direct skin contact. For instance, when having sexual intercourse. Spreads of disease may occur even if the person has not developed symptoms yet. Crowded living conditions such as those found in child care facilities, group homes, and prisons increase the risk of spread.

Another form of this disease is known as “Crusted Scabies”. This is a more severe form of the disease. It occurs in those people who have a weal immune system. On top of that, a single person can have millions of mites living on their skin. This makes them much more contagious.

The most common symptoms of scabies is intense itching and superficial burrows. These burrows are often linear. There can be multiple parallel lines side by side. In adults and older children, the burrows are often found between the fingers, in armpits, around the waist, along the insides of the wrist, on soles of the feet and on the breasts.

In children, however, they are mot commonly located on scalp, palm, face, neck and soles of the feet.

Sometimes people who have weak immune systems or those who are on immunosupressant medication can develop a severe form of scabies called as crusted scabies. This is because the weak immune system leads to a larger infestation of mites which ca spread to the entire body of the host excluding the face. Sufferers of crusted scabies exhibit scaly rashes, slight itching, and thick crusts of skin that contain thousands of mites. Such areas make eradication of mites particularly difficult, as the crusts protect the mites from topical miticides/scabicides, necessitating prolonged treatment of these areas.

Its caused by the eight legged mite as mentioned earlier. The female mite burrows just beneath your skin and produces a tunnel in which it deposits eggs. The eggs hatch, and the mite larvae work their way to the surface of your skin, where they mature and can spread to other areas of your skin or to the skin of other people. The itching of scabies results from your body’s allergic reaction to the mites, their eggs and their waste.

Dogs, cats and humans all are affected by their own distinct species of mite. Each species of mite prefers one specific type of host and doesn’t live long away from that preferred host. So humans may have a temporary skin reaction from contact with the animal scabies mite. But people are unlikely to develop full-blown scabies from this source, as they might from contact with the human scabies mite.

Scabies may be diagnosed clinically in geographical areas where it is common when diffuse itching presents along with either lesions in two typical spots or there is itchiness of another household member. The classical sign of scabies is the burrows made by the mites within the skin. To detect the burrow, the suspected area is rubbed with ink from a fountain pen or a topical tetracycline solution, which glows under a special light. The skin is then wiped with an alcohol pad. If the person is infected with scabies, the characteristic zigzag or S pattern of the burrow will appear across the skin.

Commin medications that are used against Scabies are as follows:
