Prickly heat is also known by the scientific name of “Miliaria”. It’s a skin disease in which tiny and itchy rashes appear on the skin. These may simultaneously occur at a number of areas on a sufferer’s body, the most common including the upper chest, neck, elbow creases, under the breasts and under the scrotum. There are a few different types when it come to heat rash. They are classified on the basis of how deep the blocked sweat ducts are. They are enumerated below:

1) Miliaria Crystallina

This is the most mild form of heat rash. The are also the most superficial obstruction meaning they don’t go deep beneath the skin. This form is marked by clear, fluid-filled blisters and bumps (papules) that break easily.

2) Miliaria Rubra

This type of rash occurs much deeper within the skin. This is actually the type of rash that is called “prickly heat” and is the most common type of rash that is encountered in majority of cases. In this type of obstruction, sweat leakes into the deeper layers of the epidermis, provoking a local inflammatory reaction and giving rise to the typical appearance of redness (hence rubra) and larger (but still only a few millimetres), blister-like lesions.

3) Miliaria Profunda

This is the most severe form of miliaria. This is also sometimes referred to as wildfire due to the rapid spread of this type. The obstruction is located deep in the structure of the sweat gland, causing the gland’s secretions to leak between the superficial and deep layers of the skin. The rash, and associated symptoms, tend to appear within hours of an activity provoking sweating but similarly fade within hours when the stimulus for the sweating is removed. Miliaria profunda is characterised by non-pruritic, flesh-colored, deep-seated, whitish papules


Heat rashes occur when some of your sweat gets trapped in your ducts. Instead of evaporating, the perspiration gets trapped within the skin causing inflammation and rash. It’s not always clear why the sweat ducts become blocked, but certain factors seem to play a role. They are:

Immature Sweat Ducts

A newborn’s sweat ducts aren’t fully developed. They can rupture more easily, trapping perspiration beneath the skin. Heat rash can develop in the first week of life, especially if the infant is being warmed in an incubator, is dressed too warmly or has a fever.

Tropical Climates

Hot, humid weather can cause heat rash.

Physical Activity

Intense exercise, hard work or any activity that causes you to sweat heavily can lead to heat rash.


Overheating in general — dressing too warmly or sleeping under an electric blanket — can lead to heat rash.

Prolonged Bed Rest

Heat rash can also occur in people who are confined to bed for long periods, especially if they have a fever.
